Jalpaiguri, West Bengal: In a devastating turn of events, the Kanchanjunga Express collided with a stationary goods train on Monday, resulting in the tragic loss of 15 lives. The collision occurred near Jalpaiguri railway station in the Darjeeling district at approximately 9 am.

Investigation Reveals Human Error

Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, disclosed that preliminary investigations indicate the accident was caused by human error. The loco pilot of the goods train, who sadly perished in the accident, is said to have “disregarded the signal,” leading to the catastrophic event.

Impact and Aftermath

The impact was so severe that it derailed three rear coaches of the Kanchanjunga Express. The express train, bound for Sealdah, was struck from behind by the locomotive of the Kolkata-bound goods train. Rescue and emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene as authorities began coordinating relief efforts.

The Railway Board has announced an immediate inquiry into the incident and is expected to take stringent measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. The families of the deceased and injured are being provided with necessary support during this difficult time.
